Case Study | Matipo School
When Matipo School’s new principal, Mr Paul Wright, joined the school, he immediately identified an opportunity to update their technology to improve teaching and learning.
As a previous client of Telco Technology Services (TTS), he saw significant need for digital teaching and learning but needed help to make it happen.
“The school’s IT infrastructure was not really in a good state – it wasn’t robust, it wasn’t safe and it wasn’t reliable,” Wright said.
Matipo School approached TTS in October of 2017 to undergo a project of updating their digital environment and to provide ongoing network management and support.
TTS looked at what was the best fit for the school and identified that an easy-to-use infrastructure that worked efficiently and consistently was needed to enable teachers to use digital tools in their classroom with confidence. This infrastructure needed to last several years to come.
After reviewing the role of the server in line with the emerging technologies and the projected direction of the school’s eLearning and ICT strategy, TTS proposed a Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Hybrid Cloud Solution. This solution meant using a mix of storing information physically and digitally, which was in line with the Ministry of Education’s Cloud Transformation Project. A complete refresh was needed to ensure a good ICT foundation for the school to work from. This included installing a range of up-to-date HPE hardware.
TTS also provided Matipo School with ongoing Managed Services to keep the network running smoothly, remote Support for any problems that arose day to day and is also looking to roll out Professional Learning (PLD) to upskill teachers on digital learning and engagement. TTS is also supporting the school in developing an ICT vision and strategic plan to ensure a high level of digital pedagogy.
“TTS were helpful in short-term interim solutions and then they have helped us design the ongoing solutions,” Wright said. “They were very flexible in making sure the work was done during the summer break so when we started the new school year we were safe and fit for purpose.”
Implementing the right foundation gave the school the support they needed to implement technology in their classrooms that empowered teaching and learning. A stable environment removed barriers to digital learning and gave teachers the confidence to use technology to support better learning outcomes and help young people be digitally capable thinkers. Teachers have immediate tech support and access to a team of ICT experts, allowing them to confidently use the technology available without worry.
“The way we see working with TTS in the future, it’s dynamic and it’s responsive and it’s a commitment to a shared outcome,” Wright said.
With the new Digital Technologies curriculum launched this year and the content now available for schools to introduce into their teaching and learning programmes, there is a major drive for schools to get their IT infrastructure in order, just like Matipo did.
